Why Teeth Change Colour

Natural teeth come in a range of light greyish-yellow shades, and they slowly darken with age. Coffee, tea, red wine, some foods and tobacco also leave surface stains. Even your skin tone and lipstick change how white your teeth look.

Denture teeth, on the other hand, keep the shade they are made in. If your new partial denture is matched to darker natural teeth, you are locked into that shade. If it is matched to a brighter shade, the natural teeth next to it can look yellow.

Teeth Whitening Before a New Partial Denture

The best time to whiten is before we make your partial denture. Whitening your remaining natural teeth first means we can choose a brighter shade for your denture teeth and match them perfectly. The result is one even, natural-looking smile.

How it works

  1. Consultation and shade check: we record the current shade of your natural teeth and talk about the result you want.
  2. Whitening: we explain the whitening option that suits you and how to use it.
  3. New shade, new denture: once your teeth reach their new colour, we select matching denture teeth and make your partial.

Whitening Options Explained

TypeWhat it does
Surface whitenersRemove surface stains from food, drinks and tobacco. They do not change the inner colour of the tooth.
Bleaching (whitening gels)Lighten the colour of the tooth itself for a brighter shade.
Good to know: whitening only works on natural teeth. It does not lighten denture teeth, crowns or fillings. That is why matching your denture after whitening is so important.

What About Stained Dentures?

Denture teeth cannot be bleached, but stains and tartar on a denture can often be professionally cleaned and polished. If your denture is very worn or discoloured, it may be time for a reline, repair or a new complete denture. We will tell you honestly which makes sense.

Teeth Whitening: Frequently Asked Questions

Can whitening make my denture teeth whiter?

No. Whitening products only work on natural teeth. Denture teeth keep the shade they were made in, so we match them after your natural teeth are whitened.

Should I whiten before or after getting a partial denture?

Before. Whitening first allows us to match your partial denture to your new, brighter shade.

Can stains be removed from my denture?

Often yes. Many stains and tartar deposits can be professionally cleaned and polished. Very worn dentures may need replacing.

Is teeth whitening covered by the CDCP?

Whitening is a cosmetic service and is generally not covered by dental plans. Ask us about the cost during your free consultation.
