Oral examination for dentures in Guelph – a denturist checks a patient's mouth before making new dentures

Why an Oral Examination Matters Before New Dentures

Your mouth changes over time. Gums shrink, bone reshapes and natural teeth move. A denture made without understanding those changes may rub, wobble or make chewing hard. That is why every new denture, reline or major repair at our Guelph clinic starts with an oral examination by Registered Denturist Enrique Parodi.

The exam usually follows your denture consultation, so we already know your goals. Now we look at the details that decide how your denture is designed.

What We Check During Your Oral Examination

Gums and soft tissues

We look at the shape and health of your gums, the roof of your mouth and the tissues under your tongue. Flat, thin or sore gums may need a soft liner denture for comfort.

Jaw ridges and bone support

The height and shape of your jaw ridges decide how stable a denture can be. When the lower ridge is very flat, implant-supported dentures can make a big difference.

Remaining natural teeth

If you still have some teeth, we check how strong they are and whether they can support a partial denture.

Your bite and jaw movement

We look at how your upper and lower jaws meet. A balanced bite helps you chew better and protects your jaw joints.

Your current denture

Fit, cracks, worn teeth, stains and hygiene. Sometimes a reline or repair is all you need.

Something outside a denturist's scope? If we notice anything that needs another oral health professional, such as a tooth that must be removed or an area that should be checked further, we explain it clearly and refer you to a trusted provider in Guelph.

After Your Examination: Your Treatment Options

With the results of your exam, Enrique explains your options in plain language, with their costs and timelines, and what the Canadian Dental Care Plan, your insurance or ODSP can cover. Then you decide, with no pressure.

Oral Examination: Frequently Asked Questions

Does an oral examination hurt?

No. The exam is a gentle visual and hands-on check of your gums, teeth, bite and denture. Nothing is removed or drilled.

How often should denture wearers have their mouth examined?

We recommend a check-up once a year, or sooner if your denture feels loose, causes sore spots or is damaged.

Is the oral examination part of the free consultation?

We review your mouth and current denture during your free consultation. A more detailed examination is done when you start treatment.

Can a denturist examine me if I still have natural teeth?

Yes. A denturist checks your remaining teeth to plan a partial denture, and refers you to another oral health professional if a tooth needs treatment.
